General Membership Meeting

I.  Call to Order by President Tim Anderson at 6:52 PM.


Tim began the meeting by thanking everyone for coming to the meeting.  He canvassed the audience for visitors:  Paul Crook, Hunter Jay, who will be starting the aviation program at A-B Tech this summer.  Also present was Englishman Simon Jennings, who is the VP of the local EAA Chapter.  Simon also hopes to begin flight training soon.  Also from the local EAA Chapter was Mike Kola, who also hopes to begin flight training very soon, as well.  Finally, Tim introduced Dr. Randy Johnson of Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC.  Dr Johnson is the new Department Head of their Aviation Program.  The program will award a Business Degree in two disciplines one is a BA degree as a Professional Pilot with an Airline Transport Pilot certification and the second will be a BA degree in Aviation Management. The program will be conducted at Lenoir-Rhyne’s Asheville facility and of particular note, the four-year degree program for the professional pilot track will reduce the current FAA requirement of 1500 flight hour for an ATP certificate to 1000 flight hours.  The accreditation for the program is currently in progress and the anticipate starting the program in August 2017.  This is a logical follow-on to A-B Tech’s 2-year degree program. 


Secretary: (Tim Fox) The minutes of the last general membership meeting of 21 March was approved.  

Treasurer: (Elizabeth Henry) Elizabeth stated that the Association has $15,143.72 in the bank. 

Membership: (Dave Bolser) Dave thanked everyone who had submitted their dues.  Also he has WNCPA jackets for those folks who ordered them. 

Programs: (Cindy Carter) There are no adjustments to the 2017 programs.  Cindy has scheduled an Asheville Air Traffic Control Tower tour for Saturday 22 April. Cindy reminded everyone who signed up for the tour to ensure they have a picture ID and NO weapons!  Meet at the Lacy Griffin Building at 8:45 AM.

Fly-Outs:  For this month’s fly-out we will attend the Classic Plane, Car and Motorcycle fly-in this Saturday (22 April) at the Pickens County Airport (KLQK).  They are advertising food, drinks, raffles and airplane rides.  The fly-in is from 1000 – 1500 hrs.  The Asheboro Fly-Out which has been scheduled and postponed for the last three months has grown in participants.  In addition to the WNCPA and the SPA the fly-out now includes Carolina Aero Club, the Spartanburg Chapter of the EAA as well as the Hickory Chapter of the EAA and The 99s.  All have agreed to 6 May as the next date for the fly-out to Asheboro.  The June fly-out for the Association will be the Owens-Hamilton Airport (KCUB) in Columbia, SC on Saturday 17 June, with lunch at Doc’s Barbeque and Southern Buffet.    

Educational Foundation: (Arnie Andresen) Arnie stated that the Foundation has 12 applicants for the grants.  The selection committee will meet in mid-May to consider each application.  He anticipates an awards program like last year’s awards program.  The grant award program will be at the June General Membership meeting (20 June).  

II. New Business:  

Chuck Buckland of Signature Flight Services stated that the FBO had one full time Line Service Technician position that starts at $13.00 per hour with full benefits and one part-time Line Service Technician position open that also starts at $13.00 per hour and two part-time Air Concierge that start at $11.00 per hour.  Anyone interested should contact Chuck or go to the web site to apply.

Gil Carlson gave an interesting, informative and humorous presentation on the aviation exploits of the famous television and movie actor and star: Arthur Godfrey.

The Association held a Special Election to properly staff the Board of Directors.  The election will realign the current Board to the following positions:

Nancy Marstall: From Vice President to Immediate Past President

Dave Bolser: From Membership Chairman to Vice President

Jeff Moore: From Member-at-Large to Membership Chairman

Skip Capone new Board Member to replace Jeff Moore as a Member-at-Large

No change to the other Board positions. 

Tim asked for a motion to approve the realignment of the current Board positions and the election of Skip Capone to be a Member-at-Large for the remainder of the current term.  The motion was seconded and the vote of the assembled members was unanimous in favor of the motion.

The meeting adjourned at 7:15 PM

Feature Program: Cindy introduced Dr. Ruffin Benton who, along with Cindy, gave an informative and interesting presentation on the FAA’s new “Basic Med” program, that will become effective 1 May 2017.  The presentation was a FAA Wings eligible presentation.
