C. Committee Reports

1. Christmas dinner 2014. Jan Jones was given approval to allow our reservation for the 2014 dinner to be tentatively set at the Hilton.

5. Website: Tim Anderson was given approval to renew the website for $126 unless he finds a better arrangement. Information regarding the Educational Foundation has been updated on the site.

6. WNCPILOT: Darwin Jones reported 54 have joined the Yahoo Group.

7. General Meeting Door Prize: By consensus, we will no longer have a door prize on a regular basis at the monthly General Meeting.

D.  WNCPAEF Update:

  1. Relationship between WNCPA and WNCPAEF; website, 501(c)(3). The bylaws are in the process of being updated.
  2. Information on website regarding 2014 Grant applications. Applications will be accepted beginning Feb. 1 through Apr 15, 2014.
  3. Possible change to Foundation By-laws. The revised bylaws will speak to this as well.

3. New Business:

  • “Rusty Pilots” Seminar by AOPA will be Jan 18th at Lacey Griffin Building.
  • A presentation to Asheville Regional Airport Authority board meeting on April 11Th will be given by Nancy Marstall and Tim Anderson, representing the WNCPA, as well as Cindy Carter and Ruffin Benton, representing theWNCPAEF.

There was discussion that the Association will depend on pilots to make
go/no-go decisions for Fly-Outs that reflect their own piloting experience and
abilities. The Yahoo Group will serve as one means to determine how other
pilots are intending to participate.
d. Website (Tim Anderson): We have renewed with Go Daddy Domain Service. We encourage members to use the For Sale page of the site.
e. WNCPILOT (Darwin Jones): There are now 69 Members.
f. Door prize leftovers/t-shirts/caps: We are donating our unused door prize inventory to other organizations.
D. WNCPA Educational Foundation Update (Ruffin Benton): The Selection Committee is in place and the 2014 applications will be received through April 15th. There are some new qualification for applicants. These are posted on the Web Site. There are By-Law changes in process.
E. Leaf Flights are tentatively planned for September 20th in conjunction with Aviation Day.
3. New Business
A. Nancy Marstall and Tim Anderson will represent the Association at a presentation to Asheville Regional Airport Authority Board Meeting on April 11 at 8:30 a.m.. Ruffin Benton will represent the Educational Foundation.
B. Updated logo/t-shirts: Jan Jones reported that we are looking for more quotes.
C. Ideas for 2014 will be discussed at the next meeting.
D. Food for February meeting – Chili Cookoff

Membership:  The application of Jim Farrey was considered and approved.

Website Managed by Tim Anderson:

There are a couple of events the have been announced on the site.  One is an event at Avery County airport that​includes a spaghetti dinner fund raiser for JAARS on June 7th. Another is Wings Fling at Sugar Valley at ​Mocksville on the 21st.

Fly-outs organized by Tim Anderson:

June 28th: London Kentucky (London-Corbin Magee (LOZ))

There was also a discussion about the qualities of the various airfields that we might use for our Fly-outs, and howwe might determine if the pilot skill set required would disqualify our destination.  Tim offered to draft wording for a policy that we can consider at some future time.

Audio/Visual Report:  Gil Carlson made an accounting of the audio equipment purchased.  The invoice/receipts that were cited are attached to this report. The cost is $653.69 for the audio equipment, and previously, $427.99 for the video projector.  All of the audio and video equipment will be put to use in the June General Meeting.

There was also a discussion about the possibility of putting a storage cabinet for the Association to store on-location at the Lacey Griffin Building.  Nancy Marstall offered to look into it.

Scenic Flights and AVL Regional Aviation day – September 20, 2014

Nancy and Tim will meet with Tina Kinsey to join in on the planning of this event.

WNCPAEF:  The selection committee has chosen four from the ten applicants to receive scholarship grants this year.

There will be one grant of $1000 and three grants of $2000 awarded.  The announcement and presentations will be made at the July General Meeting.

Fly a Controller:  There are four controllers that have signed up to fly with our pilots.

New Business:

Two Board members, Ruffin Benton and John Mitchell will finish their terms this year.  Volunteers for a Nominating Committee are needed.  Tim Anderson and Gary Hancock have volunteered.

It was agreed that loaning out the Association gas grill will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and if loaned, the expectation is the grill will be returned clean and with full propane tanks.

We have been invited to have a table at the Air Museum Air Fair.  We will participate if there are volunteers to work the table.

Treasurer’s report presented – $8,884.95

Committee Reports:

  • Shirts & hats (Jan Jones) – 29 shirts have been sold.  There are two color styles of caps available.
  • Christmas dinner (Jan Jones) – The contract has been signed and the deposit made for December 2nd at the Hilton Asheville Biltmore Park Hotel, 43 Town Square Blvd., Asheville, NC 28803.
  • Website (Tim Anderson) – Photos have been submitted from members and are being incorporated into the Website.

Tim suggested, and the Board acknowledged that a “Pilot in Command” reminder be added to the website announcements for Fly-outs.  Don Short’s wording was amended and accepted as follows:

 

“Pilot-in-Command” reminder.  Airport conditions vary from airport to airport.  Some airports are more challenging and require more experience and skill than others.  Pilots should not assume that an airport is “safe” based on its selection as a WNCPA fly-out destination.  As “pilot-in-command”, you have final authority and responsibility for the operation and safety of each flight.  The WNCPA is not responsible for and shall not be held liable for any injury or property damage resulting from participation in a WNCPA fly-out event.”

  • New file cabinet (Nancy Marstall) – A file cabinet has been donated by Sam’s Club. Arrangements have been made to keep it at WNC Aviation, Lacy Griffin Building.  Four keys have been distributed to the Association President, Vice President, Secretary and Jan Jones, keeper of the Association branded clothing and other items.
  • Leaf Flights (Tim and Nancy) – The Asheville Regional Airport is postponing their 5K Runway Run to spring or summer of next year.  It was the consensus to plan a WNCPA Scenic flight for late October.
  • A presentation by WNCPA and WNCPAEF to the AVL Regional Airport Authority Board is going to be August 8th.
  • WNCPA Educational Foundation (Ruffin Benton) – The four Scholarships will be awarded at the July cook-out meeting.

New Business:

  • August meeting: Cindy Carter will receive the FAAST Member of the Year Award.  
  • Member Ken Hawkins will receive the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award.

  • Membership (Jan): An application from John Oneil was presented to the Board and was approved.
  • Website (Tim): The Foundation scholarship recipients’ photos have been posted on the site. John Gaitskill tutorial on flying to CLT (Class B) has been added to the site.
  • Fly-outs (Tim): August 16 – CLT
  • Programs (Darwin): August – Public Benefit Flying
  • Fly-A-Controller (Ruffin) – One controller has participated.  Others have scheduled.
  • Leaf Flights (Tim & Nancy): They will take place October 25 and 26
  • Christmas Dinner (Jan, Nancy, Cindy, and Garry): Mark Baker, president and CEO of AOPA, will be the speaker
  • Nominating Committee (Tim and Garry): The term of office for Directors Ruffin Benton and John Mitchell will end this year.  The nominating committee is open to recommendations. The committee will present the names of nominees at the next board meeting.
  • WNCPA Educational Foundation – (Ruffin): A member of the board has resigned.  The name of Henry Johnson has been suggested to be considered as a nominee to fill this vacancy.

New Business:

  • WNCPA and WNCPA EF will make a presentation of information about the organizations to the Asheville Regional Airport Authority Board at their meeting at 8:30 a.m. Friday August 8th.
  • Cindy Carter will be presented with the FAASTeam Member of the Year award at the August general meeting.
  • Ken Hawkins will be presented the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award at the August general meeting.
  • Dinners: August – chicken from Bubba’sOctober – pizza
  • The board approved that all monies collected for the dinner will be given to the WNCPA EF in memory of Bob Carter.

Fly a Controller – Ruffin Benton:

    • One flight has been completed.
    • Ruffin also reported doing three flights with three kids for the Pilots for Christ organization.

Nominating Committee – Tim Anderson and Garry Hancock:

    • The names of David Bolser and Susan VanFleet were recommended to fill the Director vacancies.
    • The board approved these names as nominees to present to the membership at the September meeting.
    • The membership will vote in the October meeting for these and any other forthcoming nominations from the floor.

Leaf Flights – Nancy Marstall and Tim Anderson:

    • Information has gone out to the FAA, Landmark Aviation, and the AVL Tower.  
    • A volunteer ground crew is being organized.
    • Eleven planes and pilots are available.
    • Pursuing staging the event at WNC Aviation and the South Ramp.
    • Pursuing TV, radio and working with other organizations for promotion.
    • Prices will be: $40 –  Adults
    • $20 –  age 12 and under
    • $5 discount for any who preregister

 

Christmas Dinner – Jan Jones; 

    • Announced for Dec. 2 at 6:00 p.m.
    • The meal begins at 6:30
    • Passed – the price for members and their guests will be $48
    • There will be a cut-off date announced for this price and then others will be able make reservations.
    • Mark Baker, president and CEO of AOPA will be our guest and speaker.

WNC Educational Foundation Report – Ruffin Benton:  The treasury balance is $8,506.

November 4, 2014

Reports and Unfinished Business

Secretary’s Report:  Read and approved.

Treasurer’s report:The bank balance is $13065.24. Proceeds from the Scenic Flight event are $6307.03.

Committee Reports

– Christmas Dinner (Jan): 51 reservations have been made so far. The menu is set. We have room for 100.The price will be set for non-members according to cost.

– Membership and Merchandise (Jan): Applications for three new members were considered and approved: Rayburn Carothers, Ray Ostrowski, Edward Riester. In 2014 the Association, closes the year with 143 members. There have been 39 shirts sold. ​There are shirts and caps in inventory, available for sale. The motion was made and passed to raise the Membership Initiation Fee for new members to $10.

– Programs (Darwin): There are plans for WINGS and other programs for the coming year. These will be announced as plans are finalized. The November speaker will be Lew Bleiweis presenting the plans and progress of the SOAR project.

– Scenic Flights Recap (Nancy, Tim, and Garry): There were 87 flights and 190 passengers coming from 9 states.

– Website (Tim): The Website Domain has been renewed for 2 years. The provider is going to faster servers. WNCPA opened a Facebook account in September. The website content has been increased.

– Fly-out Report (Tim):  During this past year weather has permitted seven Saturday Fly-outs to six places. There was also a weekend fly-out to Pensacola and good participation in the Triple Tree event.

– Fly a Controller (Ruffin): The offer was extended again to the tower personnel. Tim reported his good experience giving a Controller a ride.

– WNCPA Educational Foundation (Ruffin): There has been a good response of donations, some as memorials to Bob Carter.The present status of the fund is $16,693. ​The Foundation Board is looking at new ways to structure the grants to make them most effective. The Board continues the process of fine-tuning the By-Laws.

New Business

– Nancy shared a summery of events and accomplishment of the 2014. There was a discussion of some new ideas for the year to come.
