Announcements:
Both 2012 Scholarship Grantees, Rheta Perkins and Grant Smith, have now completed their solo flights.
Tena Kinsey, Director of Marketing for the Asheville Regional Airport, presented a check of $6180, proceeds from the Aviation Day, to the Pilots Association, which will go into the Aviation Education Fund.
Fly-Out plans for Saturday January 19th are for Stanton BBQ and Fish Camp in Bennettsville, SC
Fly-Out with details TBA to The fly-out is to Visit the Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles International Airport, with a tentative date of May 10 and 11.
Sun and Fun in Lakeland, FL will be April 9 – 14 this year
Next Month our meal will be the results of our annual Chili Cook-off
Jim Tyson Introduced Larry Griswold who made the association aware of this year being the 70th anniversary year of Robert Morgan and his crew visiting Asheville in the Memphis Belle B17 in 1943

The program was WNCPA Recognition Night. 36 individuals were honored and presented certificates of appreciation for the part they took in making 2012 a great year for the Pilots Association

Deputy Executive Director of Development and Operations at Asheville Regional Airport, Mike Reisman attended the meeting to give information and answer questions about things that are taking place at the Airport. Some of the information shared is:

A representative from Asheville Regional will regularly attend future meetings

AVL is receiving bids for construction of a new Airport Fire, Police, and Communications Facility, with a target date of 2014

Plans are underway for a parallel taxiway on the west side of runway 16/34 and the rebuilding of the runway and the existing taxiway
-
Because of magnetic pole shift, the runway will be re-commissioned at the end of the construction as 17/35
-
The runway/taxiway project has a four year construction schedule

The airport has added a new aircraft rescue vehicle to its service equipment
-
There will be a public open house at the AVL Terminal to present information of the airport master plan on February 25th, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.

The program was presented by WNCPA member David Olday. David took us on a video tour of Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) near Rosman, NC. Most interesting was the part about the Dedicated Interferometer for Rapid Variability. There is a special tour planned for pilot association members and guests, planned for June 7th at 6:00 p.m.

Marty Kretchman, General Manager of Landmark Aviation – AVL, shared some of the things going on with the FBO.
· Landmark is renovating the former Odyssey facilities
· A pancake breakfast is planned sometime in August
· Self-serve lower price fuel is in the plans
Darwin Jones promoted the recently formed Pilots Association Bulletin Board
Tim Anderson discussed Fly-Outs each 3rd Saturday
The one in May to PDK with lunch at the 57th Fighter Group saw participation from 10 people in 5 aircraft
Arnie Andresen announced the CAP program at Hanger 4: Exposing interested people to mountain search and rescue. CAP is also the sponsor of AVL Live ATC
Dr Ruffin Benton discussed instances in which a Medical Examiner must contact a consulting physician
The July meeting will be our annual cookout

The program speaker was Andy Hanes, career pilot from the Mills River area who began his training at the Asheville airport. His topic was how adopting some of the commercial pilot procedures and habits could contribute to General Aviation safety.

Announcements:
Asheville Regional Airport Aviation Day and 5K Race will be September 21st from 10:00 to 12:00.
The WNCPA will offer scenic flights from 10:00 to 6:00. The proceeds from the scenic flights will go to the Educational Foundation.
Cindy Cater announced that volunteers are needed for helping with the logistics of the Scenic Flights
The flight out on 8/24 will be to Abington – VJI
Johnny Wright will give a presentation on stall and spin awareness and recovery.
Dr Benton discussed ways in which the process regarding special medical issuances is easier to do now.
The Association has ordered leather portfolios that are monogramed with the WNCPA name to give to guest presenters at our meetings. These are also available for purchase for $30.
There are VHS training tapes being culled from the Association library. They are available to anyone that would like them.

WNCPA will offer scenic plane rides from10:00 a.m. through the rest of the day as a fundraiser. Cindy Carter discussed volunteers and logistics.
Fly-Outs: October 19th – Shellby. It is a BBQ and fly-in day with a 25c discount on fuel.

SE Aviation day at Greenville Downtown (GMU) September 27 & 28.
AOPA Air Safety Institute, October 3rd, Greenville Marriott, Mark Grady presenter.

AB Tech is in the process of considering an Aviation Degree Program that could perhaps start as early as the fall of 2014.

Bill Pendergrass Talked about the EAA B17 event October 25, 26, and 27
WNCPA will give Leaf Flights on the Friday and Saturday that the B17 is at the airport
John Gaitskill announced the AOPA Summit in Texas.

WNCPILOT Yahoo Group:
Darwin Jones reported on the growing WNCPILOT Yahoo group. It is an informal forum for such things as sharing information on fly-outs, e.g., pilots can post if seats available or members can post if they would like to ride. Other club or flying information can be shared.
Darwin encouraged each of us to consider joining.
Dr. Benton talked about the possibility of the pilot medical requirements to soon call for sleep apnea testing for pilots with a Body Mass Index over 40 and a neck girth of 17” or more.
Announcements:
- There will be a Santa Fly-In at the Morganton Airport (MRN) on December 7th.
- A raffle will be held at the Christmas Dinner. Two headsets donated by David Clark, and a $200 scholarship to King School Video training donated by King Schools, will be prizes. The proceeds will go to the Educational Foundation.
- AOPA will hold a Rusty Pilots seminar at WNC Aviation January 18th at 10:00 a.m. Registration can be made on line.
